Franschhoek on Monday the 8 February 2010 suffered its worst fire in over a decade. the fire, reportedly started by Working for Water workers deep in the Berg River valley late on Friday 5 Feb 2010 burnt its way up the back of the Franschhoek Mountain over the weekend and started coming down the Franschhoek side of the mountain in the early hours of Monday morning.
Throughout the morning Working on Fire Choppers were grounded due to the thick pall of smoke over the Franschhoek Valley. By midday the wind began picking up from the south east and with increased visibilty the chopperes were able to take off and bigin the work of fighting the fire. The first in series of video above takes us to that point and is dedicated to the men and women of the Working on Fire force who risk there lives fighting fires all over South Africa.
