Community Wine Tasting Evenings at Mont Rochelle Mountain Vineyards.

The 5-star Mont Rochelle Hotel & Mountain Vineyards in Franschhoek is hosting a series of wine tasting evenings, to assist members of its close-knit community, and in particular those within the hospitality industry, to expand their knowledge of vintages produced here.

Entitled ‘Tasting 101’, these fun and informative evenings are hosted by Mont Rochelle’s accomplished young winemaker Dustin Osborne, who, together with another prominent guest winemaker, will unpack one varietal per event.

Says owner of Mont Rochelle, Erwin Schnitzler: ‘As an active member of Franschhoek’s hospitality community, we are always seeking new ways to enhance the reputation of our magical corner of the Cape. We believe these wine-tasting evenings will develop an innate passion and knowledge of wines from our valley, among the people who serve within our hospitality industry. These ‘ambassadors’ will then impart their knowledge to locals and guests, which could have a far-reaching, positive effect on wine tourism here.’

Tastings take place in the Country Kitchen restaurant at Mont Rochelle from 18h00 to 20h00 on designated evenings.

We are planning some interesting tastings for the year to come, like: a blind tasting, a vertical tasting, budget wine tasting, gadget evening and a quiz evening. Anyone interested in being added to my mailing list, can email me. The cost is R100 per person and the will take place every 1st Wednesday of the month from Feb – November. The cost includes the tasting as well as canapés served after the tasting. Dustin Osborne - our winemaker and a guest wine maker will present each tasting.

Mont Rochelle Mountain Vineyards is situated on the slopes of the beautiful Franschhoek Mountains, 2km from the village centre. Wine has been produced here since 1995, and winemaker Dustin Osborne, a passionate advocate of the exceptional terroir and idyllic winemaking conditions here, currently produces around 60 000 to 70 000 bottles annually from 100 tons of grapes. These include Sauvignon Blanc, Unwooded Chardonnay, Barrel Fermented Chardonnay, MIKO Chardonnay Sur Lie, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Artemis (Red blend) as well as its premier red wine: the MIKO Cabernet Sauvignon 2006. Plantings on the farm consist of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Mouvedre and Petit Verdot, as well as a small amount of Semillon which has been grafted onto existing vines.
