I looked out my window at 5 pm, and…

The sun took a rather dramatic exit this afternoon, as the skies conspired to cloak it in a thick blanket of clouds, descending ever so ominously.

A brisk chill in the atmosphere compelled me to don a jersey and a jacket in my rather frigid chamber. The hounds are all snuggled up in a delightful little ball, and it’s high time to venture forth and procure some timber for the evening’s roaring inferno.

Off we go, with a flourish and a dash of whimsy!

This evening is likely to grow cold, and at some point in the late evening, the clouds should break up. Clear skies shall grace us through the early hours before the grand unveiling of dawn, and lo! It is quite probable that a frosty chill will descend upon the low-lying areas of the valley as the new day makes its entrance.

Franschhoek Weather Through the Seasons

Summer (December to February)

Summer is the most popular time to visit Franschhoek, with long sunny days, warm temperatures and generally clear skies. Average daytime temperatures are often in the high 20s Celsius, although hotter days can occur during periods of heat.

Mornings are usually calm and ideal for exploring vineyards, cycling, hiking and outdoor activities. Afternoon south-easterly winds may develop, providing welcome relief from the heat. Evenings are typically warm and perfect for outdoor dining beneath the stars.

Autumn (March to May)

Autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons in Franschhoek. The valley takes on rich golden colours as the vineyards change, and temperatures become more comfortable for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Days are generally mild and clear, while evenings become cooler. This is an excellent time for wine tasting, scenic drives and exploring the surrounding countryside.

Winter (June to August)

Winter brings cooler temperatures and the majority of Franschhoek’s annual rainfall. Crisp mornings, mist-covered mountains and occasional snow on the surrounding peaks create some of the valley’s most memorable scenery.

Daytime temperatures are usually comfortable, but evenings can be cold, making this the perfect season for cosy restaurants, fireplaces and cellar visits. Rain showers can arrive quickly, but clear periods often follow with exceptional mountain views.

Spring (September to November)

Spring transforms Franschhoek as the valley awakens after winter. Wildflowers appear, vineyards begin their new growth cycle and warmer days return.

The weather can be variable, with a mixture of cool mornings, sunny afternoons and occasional windy days. It is a wonderful season for walking, photography, outdoor dining and exploring the many attractions around the valley.

The Best Time to Visit Franschhoek

There is no single “best” season to visit Franschhoek — each offers something different. Summer provides long sunny days and a lively atmosphere, autumn offers spectacular vineyard colours, winter brings dramatic mountain scenery and cosy experiences, while spring showcases the natural beauty of the valley returning to life.

Whatever the season, Franschhoek’s weather is part of its charm.
